Part 3: Challenges Facing the American Dream

Step 1: Food for Thought
Read the following quotes. Write an SAF response (claim, data, warrant, conclusion) to one of them on your graphic organizer.

Step 2: Investigate
With your Dream Team, read the on-line newspaper articles listed below. These articles focus on how the present economy effects one’s ability to achieve the American Dream. What are some of the challenges facing Americans in the pursuit of their dreams today? In EasyBib, write an annotative summary and a citation for each article. Use your graphic organizer to take notes while you read. Note: You may divide and conquer to achieve this step! Each member of your team should cover two articles.

Step 3: Extend Your Thinking
Work with your Dream Team to locate newspaper/magazine articles, from the past three months, that discuss issues that impact people’s ability to achieve the American Dream. Perhaps you will find that something other than the economy is impacting the American Dream. You may divide resources. For instance, you may wish to assign local newspaper articles to one person, national newspaper articles to another and so on. Each group member is responsible for finding and summarizing one article using the library data bases. Write an annotative summary and a citation for each article in EasyBib and share it with your group.

Step 4: Synthesize
Meet with your group to share your articles. You should each have access now to 10-12 article annotated summaries. Create a concept web to illustrate the challenges faced by various groups of people in the pursuit of the American Dream. Remember that your essential question (What challenges the American Dream?) should be at the center of your web.
